Lake Superior and St. Louis River Fishing Report for Late May, 2022

May 31, 2022

Lake Superior was kicking out some good fish the weekend of 5/21/2022. On my boat, we personally caught 4 king salmon (all over 5 pounds) in one pass in the Duluth area. I also heard multiple reports from others of plenty of lake trout and an occasional walleye coming in on both the Wisconsin and Minnesota side of Lake Superior. The best lure and color for us were pink lemonade-colored stick baits running 100 feet back, on planer boards, in 15 to 25 feet of water.

The St. Louis River fishing is starting to turn on as well. The current is still pretty strong, after unusually high levels of rain recently, making the main river channel almost unfishable. Look for fish to be hanging out on the shallow flats in 3 to 10 feet of water. Crank baits like Berkley Flicker minnows or Salmo Hornets in bright chartreuse or orange colors are fishing the best. Bottom bouncers and spinner rigs with crawlers are also catching fish.

The bite should start to really improve as soon as the water clears and warms up a bit more.

Until Next Time, Tight Lines!
